Massage for Healthier, More Beautiful Skin

Everyone likes to have nice skin. That’s why we spend hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars on moisturizers, toners, cremes and all kinds of anti-aging products/remedies.

But did you know that one of the main culprits of bad skin is stress?

And you know how to fix that, right?

We thought so.

Keeping skin moisturized and protected from the sun is still very important, but one of the most important ways to maintain healthy skin is reducing stress. And if there’s a surefire way to deal with stress, it’s massage therapy.

Here is how stress hurts our skin:

  • Stress makes skin more sensitive.

Stress causes a chemical response in our bodies that makes skin more likely to break out as well as take a longer time to heal.

When we are stressed, our bodies produce more cortisol and other hormones that basically tell our glands to produce more oil. More oil as we all know, makes our skin prone to acne and other skin problems.

  • Stress worsens current skin issues.

For those of us already dealing with psoriasis, rosacea and/or eczema, stress will increase our symptomsassociated with them.

  • Stress can cause rashes and hives.

Both skin conditions can be a result of dysbiosis, an imbalance in your gut between good and bad bacteria – something that can occur when stress builds up.

  • Stress can make those wrinkles worse

While there’s no definite proof of furrowed brows leading to more wrinkles, there has been a study confirming that stress leads to cells aging faster, which would certainly contribute to more skin wrinkles sooner.

  • Stress interferes with daily skin care.

Stress has a way of distracting us from our regular routines. We tend to eat unhealthy food and skip regular care routines – both of which are likely to aggravate skin problems.

And as a sad irony, having skin problems will often lead to even more stress, exacerbating our feelings of depression or anxiety that we may already be experiencing.

Enter massage therapy. Even just 10-15 minutes of trigger point therapy has been proven to lower cortisol levels and decrease blood pressure. The lower cortisol will prevent a lot of skin problems from developing and the lower blood pressure will keep our stress in check to further reduce skin problems.

In addition to eating the right foods, occasionally detoxifying and always staying hydrated and using sunscreen protection, regular massage is a perfect anti-stress remedy that will prevent many skin problems before they have a chance to break out (pun intended)!
